FOCUS features photographs, animations and documentary videos created by elementary, middle and high school students in Magic Box programs throughout the New York area. Curated by Stephanie Pereira, the exhibit will emphasize the relationship between the student artists and their subjects, as they contrast explorations in portraiture with the natural world and its role in an urban landscape. The installation will also offer a glimpse into the students' creative process with photos of the young artists at work.
For further information call (914) 630-0256 or visit the Magic Box Productions website.

I did a weird thing the other day...I Facebooked myself. That is to say I searched for myself, on Facebook.
It was kind of amazing to see my name, but attached to all these other faces and personalities. I squinted at each one, trying to find a through line, a thing that made us "Stephanie Pereira." I asked a few to be my Facebook friend, you know, for solidarity (and to see how confusing our mini-feeds and walls could get). One wrote back. She is from Portugal, which is where my dad and my name both come from.
One funny thing I noticed was that A LOT of Stephanie Pereira's actually have three or four names. My first guess about this is that this must have to do with the traditions of the countries that contain so many of us. Another difference I noticed across our smiling faces was that my photo was so different than so many of my name-mates - could again be the traditions of our countries. HOWEVER - Call me crazy - But I did sense a general...sameness amongst us. You know us humans though, always looking for patterns!
BTW - Out of curiousity, I also looked up my boyfriend, Erik Fabian. His name is also linked to a lot of multi-named people - with him there is also a definitive predominance of latino men sharing his name - which is funny, thinking about my anglo-viking boyfriend.
